Nemetius is a Lusitanian/Celtic god of the sacred groves such as the goddess Nemetona. Inscriptions about these deities can be found in Portugal, France, England and Germany. When the Romans arrived to ancient Gaul (modern France) and Lusitania (modern Portugal) they called this deity, Nemetevs/Nemeteus.
This name has its origins in Celtic roots, the term Nemeto, as an example, Nemeton, referring to the sacred areas, "sanctuaries" of the ancient Celts and Gauls. We also find this term in the word Nemetes, the people of Celtic-Germanic origin, Nemetati, the Lusitanian tribe, Vernemeton, "Great Sacred Grove" in France, Nemetodurum, an actual town in France and other words of the same Celtic linguistic family.
